What is the difference between night vision and thermal imaging?

Night vision amplifies available light such as moonlight or infrared illumination to create a visible image, and works best when some ambient light is present. Thermal imaging detects heat signatures emitted by objects, allowing detection in complete darkness, through mist, dust and light vegetation. Both technologies are used in hunting and tactical environments in South Africa, but serve different purposes depending on terrain and conditions.
